Google releases Chrome for Android users

Google has finally released Google chrome for Android users. But don’t get excited if you are not an ICS user. Yes, Chrome is available for IceCream Sandwich users only and that also in specific countries. This Android Browser is in BETA stage and available for the ICS users residing in U.S., Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Australia, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Argentina and Brazil can download this browser from the Android Market.

The browser, first unveiled in 2008, will be available on tablets and mobile phones using the company's "Ice Cream Sandwich" Android software, Sundar Pichai, a senior vice president in charge of Chrome and applications, said in a blog posting.

Google hasn’t compromised with this browser and it is having all the features of its desktop version.
The company aims to improve the speed of mobile browsing by preloading top search results and enabling users to get the same tabs and bookmarks they have on their desktops.
"Chrome for Android is designed from the ground up for mobile devices," Pichai said. The software is "focused on speed and simplicity, but it also features seamless sign-in and sync so you can take your personalized Web browsing experience with you wherever you go, across devices."

Chrome for Android Beta also features the ability to sync with the seamless sign-in that allows you to take your personalized web browsing experience with you, wherever you go, no matter what device. It also has tabbed browsing and loads your top search results in the background while you type, speeding up your search experience.  The downside to Google’s Chrome is that you won’t have the choice to use this new browser unless you have a brand new Android 4.0 device, or one of the lucky devices that has managed to receive an upgrade.

The desktop version of Google Chrome is extremely popular among the users. It’s ICS version is also expected to be a hit among the users.

ADzero-A SmartPhone made of Bamboo

Do you think mobiles can be made of Bamboo? Have you ever seen such a phone? It’s not possible, right? Well, let me tell you there is a phone made of bamboo. It is called ADzero and is designed by a 23 year old British student Kieron-Scott. The phone is powered by IceCream Sandwich(ICS) so it is a Smart bamboo phone. The phone will launch later this year.

The story behind the phone is interesting. Kieron was frustrated due to similar design of most of the smartphone which was obviously due to same material used in making them. So he just made the design and posted it online. After that a technology entrepreneur contacted him and they hired a hardware engineer and formed their company. This phone was on display at London Design Week.

The phone does have access to Google’s Android market and one special feature of the phone is its camera. It’s flash is different from other phones. The phone is using built-in ring flash. . Instead of a single light next to the camera lens that flashes to illuminate proceedings for a photo, the ADZero boasts a light-up ring surrounding the lens. That means that the light hits your subject from all angles instead of just from one direction, which produces more even lighting and minimises shadows. Thus,you get superior quality pics from it.

It is not the first time when an attempt to create electronic item from bamboo is made. Asus has already made laptop from bamboo. Coming back to ADzero, this phone will go on sale by the end of this year and ofcourse there will be a lot of buzz about it. Would you buy it?

Google releases Android Design Style Guide for developers

Android is an open source software, by the virtue of which everyone could spin off a version of their own without raising any copyright concerns. Since Google has absolutely no intention to curb the ethos of open source software, one of the casualties have been too much of fragmentation and difference in the design of the interfaces and applications.

During the launch of the latest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS), Google had promised to sort out the problem and unify the experience on Android. Going forward on that direction, the company has recently introduced an Android Design Style Guide to help the developers with advice on recommended iconography, patters, colors, typography, and writing styles. The site offers a comprehensive visual to third-party application developers, giving suggestions on everything from how to implement different visual elements to overall back-end patterns for the OS itself. Moreover, since ICS is supposed to be the same OS for both mobile phones and tablets, it was imperative of them to release a style guide of this nature.
No, it is not compulsory for the designers to follow the style guides while developing an application, but Matias Duarte, Google’s Director of Android user experience, feels that most developers shall surely abide by it once they find that apps built outside the style guide shall stand out.

Windows 8 is expected to launch in March and App Player will encourage people to buy Windows 8 device. BlueStacks has strike a deal with Taiwanese manufacturer InHon which will be launching its first ultrabook in March with preloaded App Player.

Apple app store beats Android market in revenue generation

 

We all know Android users count more than 50% of total smartphone users. But this doesn’t prove Apple’s era will be over soon. People are still crazy for iPhones and iPads and iPad is still the world’s best selling tablet with more than 10 million units sold out every quarter. App market analyst Distimo did a study of all the app stores for the year 2011 and the results were not shocking but a little unexpected.

According to the study of Distimo Apple’s app store generates much more revenue than Android market.The top 200 apps on Apple generated 4 times more revenue than the top 200 apps on android with more than half of the revenue coming from the free apps for both the app store. The ads running on free apps and purchases through these ads generated revenue.

According to the study-50% of the revenue for apple and 65% of revenue for Android is generated by free apps proving that free apps are more effective way to make money than paid apps. Study also reveals whereas Apple app store and Android doubled the number of apps available within a year, Window phone marketplace grew more than 4 times in terms of number of apps available which helps it to overcome RIM’s Blackberry app store and Nokia Ovi store. Now Apple app store continue to rule the all the other app store in terms of no of apps, obviously followed by Android market.

In my previous post I did a comparison of Samsung Galaxy Pop and Samsung Galaxy Y. These were entry level android phones. Now I am going to compare iPhone 4S and Samsung Galaxy S2 probably the two best smart phones out there. First let’s talk about Galaxy S2-

 

Samsung Galaxy S2 is a very light weight phone with just 116gm weight. It is having a 4.3 inches super AMOLED plus capacitive touch screen which ghve a resolution of 480x800 pixels with 210 ppi pixel density. Ofcourse it is a multi-touch phone with gorilla glass display. The RAM in it 1GB.It is a dual camera phone with 8MP primary camera and 2MP secondary camera for video calling. With primary camera you can take pics at 3264x2448 pixels and it allows you to take full HD videos 1080p with 30fps.Camera is having autofocus and LED flash capabilities. It also supports Geo-tagging, touch focus, face and smile detection, image stabilization features. Currently this phone runs on Gingerbread which will be getting Icecream Sandwich soon. The processor is 1.2 GHz cortex A9 which complement the phone nicely. Talking about the battery life, there is 1650 mAh Li-ion battery which gives a talktime of about 18h20min on 2G and 8h40min on 3G.

Now it’s the turn of Apple’s iPhone 4S.Siri is obviously the best features in it, which is the main reason for the record breaking sales of iPhone 4S.iPhone 4S is a bit heavier than Galaxy S2 with 140 gm weight. It is having 3.5 inches LED-backlit IPS TFT capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 640x960 which is better than Galaxy S2.It is having a RAM of 512 MB which is a downside for the phone. iPhone 4S runs iOS 5.Camera wise both the phones are equal. iPhone 4S is also loaded with 8MP camera with 3264x2448 pixels image capture ability and 1080p full HD video recording. The secondary camera is VGA. The processor is 1 GHz cortex A9 compared with 1.2 GHz of galaxy S2.The battery in it 1432 mAh Li-Po giving a talktime of 14 hr on 2G and 8 hr on 3G.

Both the phones are good, but I would suggest you to go for Samsung Galaxy S2 if you are not a diehard fan of Apple. As far as Siri is concerned Icecream Sandwich will be having a voice commanding system which is also very fast and accurate. Also Galaxy S2 is cheaper than iPhone 4S.So I think Samsung Galaxy S2 is definitely the better but among the two.

But there is a big problem in icecream Sandwich. Swype is not compatible with Icecream Sandwich.

For those who doesn’t know about Swype, it is method of text entry -swiping a finger across letters to spell out words. It relies heavily on knowing the relative position of your finger in relation to the screen and software as a whole. Swype makes texting in touch phones a lot easier. Samsung Galaxy Nexus which is the first phone till now the only phone to get Icecream Sandwich upgrade, its users won’t be able to install Swype. Galaxy Nexus is loaded with Android 4.0.2 and the version 4.0.3 was launched on December 16, but the problem is still there. People are working on the working on fixing this problem as soon as possible but yet no time is given when Swype will be compatible with Icecream Sandwich. The stock keyboard in the latest version is having vast improvements over the previous versions but still it is no match for Swype. Just hope Swype will come back to Android very soon.
